STEVE MCQUEEN was known as a rebellious figure in Hollywood, and during the 1970s, he entered into a relationship with Barbara Leigh, who was previously involved with Elvis Presley. This situation led to considerable jealousy between the two stars, and Steve did not hesitate to make disparaging remarks about the King of Rock and Roll whenever the subject arose. McQueen rose to prominence in the 1970s, particularly after his performance in the action-packed film Bullitt, along with several other notable films such as The Great Escape and The Getaway. In 1972, he was cast opposite Barbara Leigh in the movie Junior Bonner. The chemistry between the two actors was undeniable, and they soon began a romantic relationship off-screen, despite Barbara still being involved with Elvis. Reports suggest that Elvis and Barbara maintained a “don’t ask, don’t tell” arrangement, allowing them to date others while still seeing each other.

Consequently, when Barbara met Steve, she was eager to pursue a relationship with him once filming concluded. Reflecting on her experiences with both men, she recounted, “Elvis eventually discovered my connection with Steve McQueen while I was shooting Junior Bonner in Prescott, Arizona. He decided to come visit me there, which created an uncomfortable situation.” The rivalry between the two icons was mutual. Steve was equally displeased with Elvis’s relationship with Barbara. In fact, during phone calls with Barbara when Elvis was present, Steve would make derogatory comments about the King, alluding to his southern roots. He would ask her, “Is that guitar hick still there?” in reference to Elvis’s upbringing in Tennessee. Elvis, in turn, would also hurl similar insults at Steve. Barbara shared that when Elvis learned of her involvement with Steve, he insisted that she come clean about the nature of their relationship.
